I did the Maths Refresher in July 2025. I'd been trying to read through ML papers on my own for about a year and kept getting stuck on notation that looked familiar but I couldn't quite connect to actual code. Seven weeks in and that particular friction was largely gone. The notebooks helped a lot — seeing the same equation in LaTeX and then as a NumPy operation made it click faster than any explanation did.

The critique sessions in the Studio were uncomfortable at first, which turned out to be the point. When my second model's evaluation metric was challenged in front of the group, I had to actually explain why I chose it — and I realised I hadn't thought it through. I changed it, ran the experiment again, and the results were completely different. That's the kind of thing you just don't get from watching course videos on your own.

I finished the Portfolio Programme in May this year. Ten months part-time is genuinely a significant commitment and I'd be misleading you if I said it was easy to fit around a full-time job. But the structure helped — knowing what was due each week and having a mentor check-in every three weeks meant it never became formless. The written reference at the end was useful in a practical sense for a conversation I had about a new role.

I joined the Maths Refresher with a PM background rather than engineering. The pace was fast for me in weeks three and four — the optimisation section especially. I mentioned this to the channel and got a response within a few hours pointing me to some supplementary reading. I made it through. The notation reference sheet is still on my desk.

Completed the Studio in June. What I found most useful was building models I knew would be criticised. There's a very different energy to the work when you know someone competent is going to ask you why you made each decision. The GPU credits being included removed a real logistical headache — I could focus on the work rather than managing cloud costs.

I was sceptical about the ten-month commitment before I signed up. In hindsight the length was necessary — building three substantive projects properly takes time, and rushing them would have produced worse work. The interview practice sessions were more useful than I expected. Talking through a project I actually built is different from answering algorithm questions I memorised the night before.

Challenge
A backend engineer with five years of Python experience had been trying to read transformer architecture papers for eight months but couldn't follow the mathematical notation. He understood the concepts at a high level from blog posts but felt he was dependent on other people's interpretations rather than his own reading of the source material.
Solution
He enrolled in the seven-week Maths Refresher and committed to the six-hours-per-week schedule across the full programme. The decision to work through the linear algebra module with his existing NumPy knowledge as an anchor made the notation connect faster. He completed all fourteen live sessions and submitted all problem sets.
Result
By programme end he could read an attention mechanism paper directly. He started annotating the original "Attention Is All You Need" paper during the final week and found it largely accessible. He went on to enrol in the Studio programme the following quarter.

Challenge
A data analyst with a statistics background had built several models for internal dashboards but had no systematic way to evaluate whether they were good. Her models were either accepted or replaced based on stakeholder opinion rather than any defined evaluation criteria. She wanted to develop her own standard for what "working" meant.
Solution
She joined the thirteen-week Model Building Studio and worked through four modelling projects of increasing scope. In each critique cycle she was asked to defend her evaluation design before the group. By the third project she had developed a personal checklist for evaluation design that she adapted for each new context.
Result
Her fourth project, a demand forecasting model built on a public logistics dataset, was used as a worked example in the following cohort's second session with her permission. The decision log habit she developed in the Studio has carried into her daily work.

Challenge
A software engineer with three years of experience wanted to move into applied AI roles but had no portfolio to show for it. Most of her AI work had been internal tools that couldn't be shared, and she had completed several online courses that produced only completion badges rather than anything a technical interviewer could interrogate.
Solution
She enrolled in the ten-month Portfolio and Practice Programme and worked through all three portfolio projects with a mentor pairing throughout. Each project was scoped, built, documented and assessed. She attended all interview practice workshops and ran mock technical interviews using her third project as the primary discussion topic.
Result
At programme close she had three documented projects and a written reference describing the skills she had practised and how her work had been assessed. She began conversations about a new role in the month following programme completion. We cannot and do not speak to outcomes beyond the programme itself.
